The northern Rhône Valley is responsible for single-varietal Syrah, while the south specializes in Grenache blends Rhône's main white variety is Viognier. The primary white varieties of Bordeaux are Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. Of comparable renown is Bordeaux, focused on bold, structured red blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc including sometimes a small amount of Petit Verdot or Malbec. The same two grapes, along with Pinot Meunier, are used to make Champagne. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are the king and queen of Burgundy, producing elegant French red and white wines with great acidity, the finest examples of which can age for decades. Some of the greatest wine regions in the world are here, including Bordeaux, Burgundy, the Rhône and Champagne, but each part of the country has its own specialties and strengths. So a general understaning of which grapes correspond to which regions can be helpful in navigating all of the types of French wine. Accordingly, most French wine is labeled by geographical location, rather than grape variety. ![]() Many of the world’s most beloved grape varieties originated here, as did the concept of “terroir”-soil type, elevation, slope and mesoclimate combine to produce resulting wines that convey a sense of place. If you can't find them or don't want to spend that much, you can just use regular sparkling wine and add a few drops of bitters.French wine is nearly synonymous with fine wine and all things epicurean, France has a culture of wine production and consumption that is deeply rooted in tradition. What I love about the champagne is that it really does taste like a spritz on its own, so if you are feeling really lazy, you can just grab one of those! It has the same amount of alcohol as regular champagne (I'm pretty sure - I don't have one right in front of me) so plan accordingly. They are a little pricey (last time I looked they were 4 for $24 on sale at the grocery store.) It has just the right amount of sweetness and is SUPER refreshing. It's a bottled cocktail that features a hint of bitter orange flavor that reminds me of bitters. The real star of the show is the Chandon Garden Spritz. It can be used but it's not my first choice. Sparkling mineral water has a little bit of a, well, mineral flavor and is a bit less fizzy. Club soda is sometimes called sparkling water so just grab what you can find. ![]() It's super fizzy and doesn't fight with any other flavors of the drink. You can use store-bought if needed, but fresh will give you the best taste.Ĭlub soda is my favorite way to top a wine spritzer.
